This series of fish paintings was completed during a year in the locations of Brittany (France), Amsterdam and Nantucket. The fish were painted while fresh and reflect the most common local species ‘in season’.
I became enamoured with the beauty of fish when I moved to Brittany (France). Neighbours would regularly bring me freshly caught mackerel. Aside from the gratitude of a nourishing meal, I was captivated by their vitality and iridescent colours. They were so fresh, the life in them was still evident. I was moved to paint them.
After the mackerel experience I saw fish in a different way. And so this series began. The portrait painter in me perceives each fish as an individual. I hope you sense the joyful connection I felt painting them!
This will be an ongoing project over the next few years, culminating in a collection of images available in print and catalogue.
